7:00 PM
Greenville Confederate Museum

Tom Fowler opened the meeting in the absence of President Bob Kammerlin.  Dr. Kammerlin assumed the duties upon his arrival a short time later.

-As of July 1st, Jo Evans’ mother is home from the hospital.  She is undergoing physical therapy, and is still in need of a wheelchair and feeding tube, but is, thankfully, gradually progressing.  Marty and Jo would like to thank all for the said prayers and support.

-Treasurer’s Report: $1,768.98

-August 19th and 20th: Battalion School of Instruction.  This will be held at the Aiken, SC battle site.  A meal will be prepared from the Battalion Saturday night.  This is to progress understanding and learning of the School of the Soldier.  An excellent opportunity for reenactors, both experienced and new, to progress learning.

-September 23rd is the Civil War Symposium.  The Speaker for this will be Mac Wycoff. This event is the same weekend as the Battalion Elections.

-The discussed “Butler Guards Atlanta Trip” will have to be in the fall season.  Zach Morris decided it not best to get his church bus for this trip after it’s breaking down on recent trips.

-Fairview Insurance: The Butler Guards will not pay to reimburse the Fountain Inn, SC SCV camp for the cost of insurance for the Fairview Living History 2006.  John and Sharon Vaughan, Mike and Julia Barnes, Mary Lin Ashley, and Chase Heatherly represented the Butlers at the July SCV meeting to discuss this issue with the SCVs.  It was decided that the SCV camp is going to look into applying for the county of Greenville’s ATAX money fund to help cover some of the cost for the 2007 event.

-As we all are aware, the Battle of Anderson, SC 2006 was cancelled.  At this time, there seems to be no plans or talk or forming a Battle of Anderson 2007 and beyond.

-The 2006 Battle of Tunnel Hill, GA is going to be September 9-10.  It has been decided that The Butler Guards will attend, as many seem to be interested.  The Butlers plan to go gray to this event.

-The Battle of Blue Springs, TN is going to be held on October 13-15, 2006.  There are over 10 members of the Guards planning already to go.  We will fight blue.  Also, the 3rd SC Battalion will be going to the event this year.  There is a registration fee of $15 a person.  This event is well worth the fee though.  All members of the Butlers are urged to attend this event as well as Tunnel Hill.

-The Butler Guards are running low on caps and powder.   Dean Stephens is trying to get us restocked.  Cpl. Mike Looper will check on this and report back at the September meeting.

-September 23, 2006 is Palmetto Battalion elections.  Keith Powell is running for his second year as colonel.  It seems that he will be faced by Vernon Torrence, officer of the 3rd SC Battalion.  The Butlers needs to have as many guys at the elections as possible.  If Vernon Torrence becomes colonel, there will need to be a new captain of Company G. elected.

-November 10-13 is this year’s date for the annual Battle of Secessionville.  This event is located at Boone Hall Plantation in the Charleston area.  This event is the change of command in the Palmetto Battalion.

-The Battle of Atlanta has been scheduled for the weekend of November 4th in Conyers, GA.

-This year’s Butler Guards’ Christmas party as of now is going to be located at John and Sharon Vaughn’s house in the Fountain Inn area.  The date has been set to Friday, Dec. 15th.

-We would like to give a warm Butler Guards welcome to Tom and Juell Fant.  They have been a part of our unit for some time, but now are hoping to become more active in reenacting.  We are glad to have them.

-The Butler Guards plan to set up a living history encampment at the annual Springwater Festival at the park in Williamston.  This is on August 26th, 2006, beginning at 9 AM.

-Zach Morris proposed the idea of each person in the Guards to on their own purchase some item that will better their impression and make them look more authentic.  Whether it be a coat, pair of brogans, or buttons, anything to better your impressions.

-Tom Fowler recently discovered the nephew of Sgt. Kirkland of SC during the Civil War.  Kirkland became famous for climbing the wall at Fredricksburg that the Confederates took position behind to give wounded and dying Federal soldier scattered over the ground some water, while being shot at for some time.  The Federals ceased firing when they realized Kirkland’s motives, and fighting was held for a short period of time.  Kirkland is one of SC’s great heroes in the War for Southern Independence.  Kirkland’s nephew resembles him and is very interested in the war.  He agreed to take part in the Fairview Living History 2007 Lantern Tour, portraying his famous uncle.

-Tom Fowler and John Vaughn believe it would be a great idea for the unit to hold a play or possibly a lantern tour at a spectators location, such as Falls Park in the Greenville area.  This would be a great recruiting and exposure opportunity.  This will be discussed at later meetings.

-The ladies of the Butler Guards would like to get the Ladies Association in an active state again.  They separated from the rest of the unit, and brainstormed ideas and plans for themselves and the unit.  It was decided by the ladies that Mary Lin Ashley would be president of the Ladies Association, while Kalie Grace Cannon is Vice President, and Kelly Clardy is Secretary/Treasurer.  No dues will be levied for the ladies association, as the ladies already pay dues as members of the Butler Guards.

-Meeting Adjourned at 8:45 PM.
