The Second South Carolina Volunteers,
Company B; Butler Guards

Minutes of the July Meeting
July 5, 2007; 7:00 pm; Greenville Confederate Museum

-President Chuck Yeager opened the meeting by thanking Vice President Julia Barnes for leading the June meeting in place of his absence.

-The current balance for the Butler Guards’ account is $1,026.93.  Also, a reminder all company dues are due as soon as possible.

-Secretary / Treasurer Chase Heatherly mentioned highlights of his minutes from our June meeting, such as the Butler Guards’ choosing to attend Brattonsville over Blue Springs and Ft. McAlister in December over the weekend getaway at Broxton Bridge Plantation.  In addition, Chase reminded the Butlers that we needed a head count for the event of Allison’s Woods in Statesville, NC.  Only a few seemed interested, surely not enough to attend in force.  A final count shall be taken at our August meeting.

-A check has been written for $100 to the Greenville Confederate Museum, to be put toward the restoration of the historic piano the museum has acquired.  Once completed, a plaque shall be placed on the piano, and “Butler Guards” shall be placed on it, as a symbol of gratitude to our donation.  Webster Jones, an official of the museum, spoke on the progress of the piano.  The restoration is close to being completed.

-Bobby Skipper, a member of the Moses T. Fowler, Fountain Inn SCV camp attended our meeting and asked for a moment to speak.  He asked to give the SCV camp time, and although relations between our two organizations have been hurt by conflict surrounding Fairview, just to allot time and the situation will improve.  We would like to thank Bobby for coming, and look forward to working with him in the future.

-The proposed addition to the by-laws stating that members under the age of eighteen that rides to events with others, or whose guardians do not remain on the site of an event, be made to join the Palmetto Battalion for insurance purposes, in addition to signing a waiver allowing elders on site to have ability to make emergency medical decisions for the minor.  The motion was made by Julia Barnes to accept the addition as is, and the motion passed by acclamation.

-Next, as this is our July meeting, we are to elect a nominating committee, whom shall compose a nomination slate for our elections in August.  First the Board of Directors left the meeting and in another room, had to elect a member from within the Board.  After some discussion, Julia Barnes nominated Chase Heatherly to be the committee member from the Board of Directors.  Chuck Yeager seconded the nomination and Chase Heatherly was voted onto the committee by acclamation.  The Board then returned to the meeting and the floor was opened to nominations.  Julia Barnes nominated Chuck Yeager, Marcia Whaley nominated Zach Morris, Jo Evans nominated Tom Fowler, and Chase Heatherly nominated John Vaughn.  A vote was taken, and Chase Heatherly and Marty Evans left the meeting to count the votes.  They returned with the announcement that Tom Fowler and Zach Morris had been elected into the committee.  However, they had the equal number of votes, so one was not automatically decided to be the committee’s chairman.  A vote was then taken between the two and Zach Morris was elected chairman by acclamation.

-The idea of absentee ballots had been mentioned for this upcoming election.  However, a problem arose, with absentee ballots not being mentioned in the by-laws.  The membership decided to wait and work on a by-law addition to allow absentee ballots, but for this election, allow there to be absentee nominations.

-The Butler Guards have decided not to attend the Confederate Railroad event.

-Julia Barnes asked the membership to send her any interesting material we think would be good to add to our next newsletter.

-New recruit Justin Presley has been in the Butlers for 90 days or for 3 events, thus, by our by-laws, must be voted into the Butler Guards.  Julia Barnes motioned to accept him, Zach Morris seconded, and Justin was accepted unanimously.

-Closing prayer by Chase Heatherly

-Meeting adjourned at 8:10 pm.
