-Secretary's Report and Re-discussion:
-All rooms at Broxton Bridge have been taken. For $5,
there will be food avaliable in the house, only to those staying in the
houses. Many Butlers are interested: FOOD! Also, for
a small price, a hotdog dinner will be provided.
New Business:
-Mark Watt visited with us tonight and spoke on the Fairview Living History 2007. He would like the event to much a great time, best it's ever been. He asks the Butler Guards to pay half of the insurance. He would like to keep the grounds clean. He asked the Butler Guards (the host unit) to make sure the event goes smoothly and everything is kept clean. He spoke on the importance of the event, being to teach people true history of the war. He ran through arrangements for the memorial service, basic upkeeps of the event, etc. We are also supposed to have a bagpiper at the event. There will not be a lantern tour, or play, Friday night. There will be three tours Saturday night, 7 pm, 8 pm, and 9 pm. The camp had planned to have two battles on Saturday, 2pm and 4pm. However, some Butlers were worried after these two later battles, the reenactors would not have time to recover and have time to prepare for the lantern tour that night. It was decided the time of the battles would be "played by ear." Arrangements for education day were talked about. It was decided each school would move in groups of 15 to 20. Fees were discussed. There will be no fee for reenactors. Sharon Vaughn mentioned, with the absence of the play, how about having a dance, open to reenactors and spectators, anyone who'd like to come. All seemed to like the idea, and the band that is playing during the other parts of the event could possibly play at the dance. It will be decided for sure at a later date. A 2-day battle was also discussed. Would it be possible after the memorial service, the soldiers leaving the service march to the battle. Mark really liked the idea, and it appears the battle on Sunday afternoon (possibly free of charge) is a likely possibility. A battle on Sunday will be much better for the event's growth, reenactor attendance, and in turn, financial income. We would like to thank Mark for his dedication to the improvement of the event, and we will surely consider him an ally in the future.
-Chase Heatherly presented distribution of gear spreadsheet, and a new recruit information packet. The first is a record-sheet to keep up who borrows gear from the company and other individuals within the Butler Guards, with a section for a witness of the borrowing and returning to sign. The purpose of it is to make sure no company and/or member's gear is lost. The second document, a new recruit packet, is a packet including the minutes of the latest meeting, Butlers' contact info. roster, most recent newsletter, and latest copy of the bylaws. Hopefully this will allow new recruits to become familiar and accustom to the Butler Guards. Chase mentioned to the Butlers that if anyone had any suggestions for changes/improvements, to contact him, and that these drafts were NOT final drafts.
-It has been decided there will be a Board of Directors' meeting at Broxton Bridge on Sunday morning. President Chuck Yeager and Sec-Treas. Chase Heatherly, with the support of Lt. Barnes, called for the meeting. The Board of Directors are not required to meet by the bylaws, but often the BOD meeting can be very useful. The BOD are planning to begin the closed meeting around 9 am on Sunday morning.
-Sharpsburg 2007 was brought up. The cost for the event
is now $20. The march begins on Thursday and the battles begin Saturday.
The $20 fee is due by late May, which after that time, the price raises
to $25. The majority of those planning to go don't want to just go
for the march, but want to atleast fight on Saturday.
-The Palmetto Battalion's 2 bylaw proposals, voted on at Rivers'
Bridge, both passed. They were both regarding stand-alone company
status.
-Butler Guards' still are planning on going to Cheraw, despite its interference with Battle of Anderson. The Butler Guards already commited to the Battle of Cheraw, a new experience to most of them, and are planning to keep the commitment.
-The Battle of Allison's Woods is August 24-26. We will be going gray, as it is an out of state event. We will most likely be working with Hampton's Legion at this event, as they now have a large part in the planning of the event.
-Bob Kaemmerlan spoke concern that the Butler Guards' do blue too often. After reviewing the March newsletter, which showed the next several events of the Butlers' schedule to be Federal, Bob felt that the Butler Guards are often too willing to portray Federal, and are forgetting the South Carolinians we stand for. Discussion was made about why we go "Blue" to so many events. Also, it was mentioned that the Palmetto Battalion has given the BG the go-ahead to come gray to the next few Battalion-Affiliated events, such as Cheraw. We decided to go Cheraw gray, not blue, as it says in the newsletter. We also decided that, if we go to Central, we'll go gray. Bob also spoke on how he believes we as a unit should do history lessons on the 2nd SCVI, to teach the newly-joined soldiers the history of our unit.
-Mike Looper spoke on his leaving as corporal of the Butler Guards to take command of the Hampton's Legion Infantry. He believes it's in both parties' interests for the Hampton's Legion and Butler Guards to work together at any event they are both at.
-Mike Barnes spoke in reaction to Bob Kaemmerlan's concerns. He spoke on how Julia Barnes does newsletter with no help from others, despite her busy schedule. Tom mentioned why was the military officer, as well as others in the Butler Guards, not required to send a monthly article for the newsletter, as they have been in the past. It appears that more members of the Butler Guards will begin sending in articles for the newsletters.
-It was discussed whether the newsletter should remain to be mailed by Julia Barnes or if it should be sent by email and/or put on website. This will be decided at the April meeting. Although sent in mail, the newsletters are also put on the website.
-The 16th SC Colorguard has asked us to attend this year's Confederate
Memorial Service at Springwood Cemetery, in Greenville, SC. Also,
they asked if the Butler Guards could attend a schoolday at Northwest Middle
School. They left the date up to the Butlers, but it needed to be
a Friday in May. Jo Evans mentioned, from a schoolteacher's point
of view, that May is not a good time for an educational-day, as it would
interfere with the Palmetto Achievement Challenge Tests. (PACT)
