The Ninth Annual Symposium on South Carolina Civil War History
Sept. 22-23, 2006
SC Archives & History Center, 8301 Parklane Rd., Columbia, SC

For those who missed the Symposium, you missed a wonderful experience.  This event was full of outstanding speakers and resources.  Plan to attend next year - it will be around the same weekend of September in 2007.

Mike Barnes was able to spend extensive time with Mac Wycoff, author of History of the 2nd SC Infantry, and other books on the Kershaw Brigade.

Neal Rose of the Palmetto Living History Association discussed attire of the civilian male and uniforms of the military at the Speakers Reception at the Seibels House (Columbia's oldest residence, ca. 1736).

Mac Wycoff was the keynote speaker on Saturday, discussing the Human Side of the Warrior, the letters of William Drayton Rutherford and his wife Sallie.

Mike Barnes and Joe Long, the Confederate Relic Room's Curator of History inspect the Congaree Creek earthworks.

Mike Dawson, head of the River Alliance, discussed plans to protect the historic Congaree Creek earthworks and lead a tour of the site.

View of the earthworks from the Federal point of view.  Imagine 150 years ago - trees and growth gone.  The other side of the hill - Confederate guns.

Mac Wycoff, Julia Barnes, and Mike Barnes walked over a mile to reach the earthworks.  The remote location has been a blessing and kept away "civilization."

Joe Long looks on as Mike Barnes explores some of the deeper areas of the earthworks.
